Foundations Programme

Foundations is a 20-week theology course designed specifically for lay people exploring or stepping into church leadership.

We’re aware that so many people across the North East have a heart for ministry feel under-equipped theologically and can’t commit to a full degree or extended programme. Foundations aims to bridge that gap: it’s a 20-week, accessible course that builds confidence in the Bible, Christian doctrine, church history, and mission—all grounded in the context of local church leadership.

The course is ideal for those already serving or exploring new worshipping communities or other leadership roles, especially where traditional training routes feel out of reach. It’s designed to be theologically robust but pitched below undergraduate level—no prior study required, just a willingness to grow.

We’ll meet on Wednesday evenings at St John’s College, Durham across two ten-week terms: 8th Oct–10th Dec 2025 and 14th Jan–18th Mar 2026. Sessions combine short teaching inputs with discussion, reflection, and application. For those within the Dioceses of Durham and Newcastle, this course is fully funded, and for those outside it’s £400 for the whole course.
