Doctor of Theology and Ministry

An exciting and field-leading professional doctoral programme embedded in Durham University.

Studying

Full-time or Part-time

The DThM is a Professional Doctorate in theology. It is intended for anyone who is interested in the relationship between theology and practice. The programme, run in partnership with the Department of Theology and Religion and Cranmer Hall. It has two phases:

Teaching phase

The teaching phase is delivered during the intensive teaching weeks held twice a year in Durham. It is not possible to complete this training remotely and students are expected to travel to Durham to attend these session.

Research phase

The research phase is when students continue their doctoral level research in their chosen field of study supervised by a team drawn from the Department of Theology and Religion and St John’s College, completing a research thesis of 70,000 words.

Why do a taught doctorate?

The Professional Doctorate is an alternative to the PhD. It is examined in the same way as a PhD, and in the research phase students work with two supervisors as they would on any doctoral programme. The advantage of the professional doctorate is that it gives a structured taught research training that supports you as you develop your research proposal and throughout the research process. The intensive teaching weeks also offer the regular support of a cohort of fellow students to work alongside you as you do your doctorate.

DThM students who wish to submit a longer thesis of 100,000 words may apply to transfer to a PhD at the completion of the research phase of the DThM. The decision whether or not to approve such applications will be subject to careful academic scrutiny by the programme directors and other University officers.

I chose the DThM at Durham not only because of Durham’s prestige and theological legacy, but also because of the program’s emphasis on making an original contribution to the field through an inter-disciplinary approach with practical ministry outcomes. Learning to combine sociological research with theological reflection is making me not only a better scholar, but also a better pastor. Furthermore, the design of the DThM, with its part-time and long-distance option, fits the demands of my life in full-time vocational ministry in America. Finally, the other ministry leaders and practitioners in the program are an amazing community, providing friendship and support along the way. I consistently recommend the DThM at Durham to all the research-loving, academically-inclined, ministry professionals I know!
