Our Location

Cranmer Hall is England’s northernmost theological college and we are proud of our heritage and North East context.

We are situated in the historic heart of Durham City, and the college is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. Only a stone’s throw away from Durham Cathedral, our College boasts a series of interconnected Georgian houses, as well as secluded gardens and lawns stretching down to the River Wear.

The North East of England can lay claim to being the cradle of English Christianity – St Aidan came to Holy Island in AD 635 and English history was first written by Bede, at Jarrow. This heritage continues to shape the region today.

Our northern location brings many blessings, not least placement opportunities and an abundance of partnerships which are described elsewhere in this site.

Less than three hours from London by train, North East England is a place of contrast. To the east are sweeping beaches and to the west you’ll find heathery hills and moody mountains with the famous World Heritage Site, Hadrian’s Wall running right through the middle. Sparkling cities like Newcastle and Gateshead complement Durham and thrive with shopping, the arts, and nightlife.

Wherever you come from, training at Cranmer will equip you for ministry in the whole church and offer a distinctive perspective on life and ministry that will enrich you and those you serve.
