Funding and Fees

All the information you need for funding and fees.

We don’t want funding to be a barrier to training. If you are sponsored for ordained ministry by the Church of England they will pay for your training and (for full-time ordinands) your maintenance as well. If you are supported by another church, they may well be able to help with fees and living costs.

Details of tuition fees for our programmes are available via the sources below. If you have any questions at all about fees or funding, please reach out to us on cranmer.admissions@durham.ac.uk.

We are delighted to offer two different scholarship opportunities for incoming students:

Cranmer Scholarships

We’re offering up to ten Cranmer Scholarships for students beginning a course of study in 2026.

The Cranmer MA Scholarship carries a value of up to £5,250 p.a. and the Cranmer BA Scholarship a value of up to £4,800 p.a., paid towards the tuition fee. The Scholarships will be awarded to candidates from any denomination or network, who are not eligible for funding from their denomination or the Student Loans Company, and who are able to demonstrate one or more of the following:

  • Exploring a call to ministry or theological education
  • From the North East, or wishing to serve within the North East
  • First generation of their family to enter higher education
  • Of Global Majority Heritage
  • From a lower income background or household

Scholarships are tenable for the duration of the course of study, subject to an annual review confirming satisfactory completion of academic requirements. Students studying part-time will be eligible to apply for a Scholarship award up to 50% of the value of the relevant tuition fee.

Applications should be made via the Scholarship Application Form available from cranmer.admissions@durham.ac.uk, with an application deadline of 31 July.

Bursaries

For those who don’t receive a Cranmer Scholarship we have Ministry Bursaries available for those in some form of Christian ministry, which reduce the fee payable by up to 25%. We also have bursaries for international students. Details of all funding opportunities are available on request from cranmer.admissions@durham.ac.uk

Hardship and Other Funding

If you encounter hardship during your time in study, the Friends of Cranmer Hall Fund can make small hardship grants to cover specific needs. Cranmer students are also eligible to apply for relevant St John’s College scholarships and bursaries.

Cranmer Hall is comfortable in its own skin, gracious, kind, hospitable and caring.
