Children and Young Peoples Ministry Pathway

At Cranmer Hall we are excited to offer a training pathway for Children’s and Youth Ministry. Participants study for an HE Certificate or HE Diploma in Theology, Mission and Ministry, taking specialised modules in Children’s and Youth Ministry.

Combining theological exploration, theoretical knowledge, and practical skills, this course offers students the chance to grow in their own faith and discipleship. At the same time, they will learn how to play a key part in supporting local churches to grow younger and more diverse.

This course is for anyone who would like to:

  • deepen their understanding of the Christian faith
  • learn more about children’s ministry & youth ministry
  • be equipped for mission and ministry, especially with children and teenagers
  • grow in their discipleship and life of prayer
  • be part of a diverse and encouraging learning community

Applicants might already be part of ministry in this area in their churches, be contemplating a career in this area, or simply want to deepen their theological understanding in this area as a way of discerning God’s call on their lives.

What will I study?

We have worked carefully to select modules which will give students a firm foundation of knowledge to build and develop their ministry with children and young people. Specialist Children and/or Youth Modules include:

  • Introduction to Models of Mission and Ministry with Children and/or Young People.
  • Growing Faith in Children and Young People
  • Introduction to Theology and Human Development in Childhood and Adolescence
  • Values, Policy and Practice in Children and Family Work/Youth Work

How will I learn?

Teaching is delivered across two terms, running between October and March each year. Typically, you would be attending about three classes a week, taught on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

These modules are assessed in a variety of ways, including placement reports, reflective journals, and short essays. You will have lots of support in preparing for these assessments and access to Durham’s leading collection of theological resources.

What is the cost?

Information about the cost of our programmes is available under Fees and Funding. Students on the CYP pathway normally study part-time. The fee includes all of the teaching and training, the Discipleship Group and staff support, and Durham University IT/library access.

We have mean-tested bursary funding of up to 50% of the course costs. You will receive information about this as part of your application pack. For an application pack email cranmer.admissions@durham.ac.uk.
