New Lecturer in Old Testament at Cranmer Hall

We are delighted to announce that Lizzie Hare is to be the new Lecturer in Old Testament at Cranmer Hall within St John’s College, Durham.

Lizzie has degrees from Durham and Cambridge and her PhD at King’s College, London is on a theology of loneliness in the Hebrew Bible. She has lived and worked in Sweden and China and currently lives and serves as part of a Christian community on an estate in NW London.  She also serves as a leader within CPAS Falcon camps.

Lizzie will teach Old Testament to undergraduates and postgraduates, as well as biblical Hebrew at beginners and advanced level, as part of Cranmer Hall’s ongoing commitment to teach biblical languages. Lizzie will also lead Cranmer Hall’s development of equality, diversity and inclusion across the whole community.

Commenting on her appointment, Philip Plyming, Warden of Cranmer Hall, said, ‘I am very excited to have someone of Lizzie’s ability and potential joining the team at Cranmer Hall.  Lizzie has been recognised by a number of institutions as an emerging scholar of the highest quality, and staff and students alike were impressed by her passion, clarity and creativity in teaching from the Old Testament.  I know she will further strengthen the team of biblical scholars at Cranmer Hall seeking to equip women and men in handling the Bible well and thus resourcing the mission of God in this generation.’

Emma Parker, Deputy Warden, added, ‘Lizzie is a person not only of outstanding academic ability but also real faith and missional heart.  Lizzie’s cross-cultural experience and work supporting young people with life challenges means she is superbly equipped to further strengthen the work already going on at Cranmer Hall to celebrate diversity and tackle barriers to flourishing in all its forms. I know she will make her mark quickly and be an inspiring example to the next generation of church leaders training at Cranmer Hall.’

Lizzie Hare said, ‘I am delighted to accept the position of Lecturer in Old Testament at Cranmer Hall within St John’s College, Durham.  I have long admired the community at Cranmer Hall for their commitment to both a missional Christian faith and high quality biblical study, and am greatly looking forward to returning to Durham and joining the team in the coming months.’

Lizzie will take up her new role on or before 1 Jan 2022, subject to the usual checks.
