Cranmer Alumni Rt Revd Joanna Penberthy Consecrated Bishop of St David’s, Wales

Cranmer Hall is delighted that another of our alumni has been appointed to the office of Bishop. The Right Revd Joanna Penberthy was appointed as the 129th Bishop of St Davids on Saturday 21st January 2017. Joanna started her training at Cranmer Hall in 1983, before serving the Church in Wales in a wide range of vital roles. We are so pleased that she has been consecrated as the first female Bishop in Wales in a moving ceremony at Llandaff Cathedral by the Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan. She will be enthroned at St David’s Cathedral on February 11.

Bishop Joanna comments “I didn’t think at the beginning of my ministry that I would ever see women in the episcopate but you had to keep believing. What was important was living out the calling that we had at that time and by doing so, opening people’s eyes to the fact that God doesn’t just call men, God calls all of us to his ministry in a way which fits our own particular gifts and talents.”

We will be holding Joanna in our prayers and cheering her on from the North East of England as she takes up this exciting and important ministry.

Revd Dr Kate Bruce

(Deputy Warden, Cranmer Hall)
